It indexes some 13,000 names and is twice the size of earlier editions. This is the story of the landed Huguenot family of ROUBEL over 500 years and its persecution by the ruling Catholic monarchy from the early 1500's to the French Revolution of 1789. The ROUBEL's were lawyers, surgeons and apothecaries and goldsmiths. The publication has separate chapters on Huguenot families of POITEVIN, MARCHEGAY and ROUX., who were goldsmiths, lawyers and merchants respectively. It also describes the contribution one Roubel made to the illegal gambling dens in London from 1773 - 1817 and the riveting story of his son William ROUBEL'S role in the early political intrigues of Prince Edward Island in Canada from 1808 - 1822. These eventually led to responsible government and confederation. Over 1000 Australians have ROUBEL heritage today.
"This is a remarkable, well presented work - an interesting story of a large family of Huguenot origins. It's a model of how to present a family narrative and satisfy genealogical exactitude. - The Genealogist's Magazine (London), Sep 2005." |
